Wrexham’s 4-1 and the scorers Fipster left out in the cold
Five correct calls were enough to keep the week respectable, but the round’s real story was elsewhere: Wrexham’s win over Preston landed cleanly, while Liam Millar, Joseph Worrall and a few other uninvited names did most of the damage across the division.
The week started with a decent enough spine and ended with too many loose ends. Five correct calls is not nothing, especially in a Championship round that kept finding ways to ignore neat scorelines, but the misses were loud enough to matter. The model found a few winners, yet it also trusted several familiar attacking names who never quite got to the party. That is usually where a round turns: not in the broad outcome, but in which scorer actually takes the first bite.
Wrexham was the cleanest read, even if the margin grew teeth later on
The best hit was Wrexham’s 4-1 win over Preston. Fipster had Kieffer Moore down as the main route to goal, and that part held: he scored, which mattered because it matched the model’s basic read of where Wrexham’s threat would come from. The bigger point is that this was not just a lucky name on a list. The prediction leaned on Wrexham’s home scoring pattern and Kieffer Moore as the focal point, and the actual game followed that logic once it opened up. Joseph Worrall and Benjamin Whiteman then added goals Fipster had not called, which made the final scoreline look more extravagant than the original forecast, but not contradictory. The model got the direction right and at least one key scorer right; that is what a proper tick looks like when it has some mud on its boots.
Southampton-Bolton was where the numbers got too comfortable
If one miss explains the round best, it is Southampton’s goalless draw with Bolton. This was not a case of being undone by one rogue late goal or an odd red card; it was simpler than that. The model over-weighted Southampton’s home scoring habit and treated Bolton’s attack as something to be managed rather than feared. Instead, Daniel Peretz kept things shut for Southampton at one end while neither Samuel Dalby nor Thierry Gale turned their pre-match billing into anything useful at the other. That is a useful correction for future rounds: strong home output is worth respecting, but it does not guarantee a side will keep producing at that rate when the match state stays stubbornly flat.
The round belonged to players Fipster did not have first time around too often for comfort
There were still proper individual wins for Fipster’s shortlist. Andri Guðjohnsen scored twice for Blackburn after being named before kick-off, and Isaac Price also delivered for West Brom after being flagged pre-match. Luca Tange Kjerrumgaard did his bit for Watford as well. But this round also belonged to names outside the original frame: Liam Millar struck twice for Birmingham without any pre-match call attached to him, Joseph Worrall scored in Wrexham’s win from nowhere in prediction terms, and Demarai Gray also popped up uncalled. Add Jamie Vardy and Tawanda Chirewa turning Burnley-Wolves on its head relative to the forecast, plus Divine Tayon Mahogany Mukasa deciding Swansea-West Ham, and you get the real lesson of Round 11: Fipster had some of the right doors marked, but several goals came through windows instead.
What Round 11 asks for next time around
The next job is not to become timid; it is to be less trusting of tidy attacking stories when recent form is doing all the talking. This round showed that some player calls can still land cleanly when they are tied to a clear role — Kieffer Moore being one example — but it also showed how quickly a forecast can drift when too many scorers are borrowed from reputation rather than match shape. Keep backing structure where it is strong. Just leave room for an awkward scorer or two; Championship sides are rarely polite about such things.
