Serie A surprises keep Fipster on its toes on May 17
A day of mixed fortunes for the Fipster model in Serie A, with just one star performance from Como's narrow win, a couple of ticks for Napoli and Roma, but mostly misses including a few unexpected away victories and draws.
The Serie A round on May 17 served up a feast of unpredictability, leaving our beloved Fipster model with more misses than hits. The standout moment was Como's 1-0 victory over Parma, where the model nailed the exact score and outcome perfectly — we'll take that one as a star performance.
Napoli's comfortable 3-0 away win at Pisa and Roma's 2-0 home success against Lazio earned the model a couple of ticks, getting the outcome right and even the halftime call in both cases. Not bad, but the rest of the day was a bit more challenging.
The model missed the mark on several fronts: Atalanta losing 0-1 to Bologna despite a predicted home win, Juventus falling 0-2 to Fiorentina against expectations, and Inter's 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona where the model confidently predicted a home thrashing. Genoa's narrow 1-2 loss to AC Milan and Sassuolo's 2-3 defeat by Lecce also caught the model off guard.
Even Cagliari's 2-1 win over Torino and Udinese's 0-1 loss to Cremonese slipped through the model's fingers, showing that Serie A's unpredictability remains a formidable foe. Still, with one star, two ticks, and seven misses, the model keeps learning — and so do we.
