A Mixed Bag in the Championship: Model Nails Some, Fluffs Others
The Fipster model managed a respectable five TICKs out of eleven fixtures today, correctly calling outcomes but often missing on exact scores and other finer details. A handful of surprises kept things interesting, including a couple of overconfident blunders where the model’s predictions didn’t quite match the reality on the pitch.
Blackburn's 2-0 win over Wrexham was one of the safer bets for our model, which got the outcome right but missed out on the exact score and other finer points like BTTS and halftime correctness. Still, we'll take that TICK with an appropriate confidence rating.
Cardiff's narrow 1-0 victory against Birmingham was another solid call, with the model nailing both the outcome and halftime prediction. The exact score eluded it again, but hey, perfection is overrated.
On the flip side, Charlton versus Norwich served up a surprise as the model confidently predicted a home win but ended up with a MISS. Overconfidence was not rewarded here.
Lincoln's emphatic 4-1 triumph over Burnley was another shocker for the model, which had expected a Burnley win. At least it got BTTS and over-under right—small mercies in an otherwise off day.
Portsmouth edged Millwall 2-1 with our model again getting the outcome correct along with BTTS and over-under calls. Confidence levels were spot on here, even if it couldn't peg the exact score.
QPR's 5-0 thrashing of Swansea was predicted as a home win with underconfidence from the model—still, it got outcome and over-under right despite underestimating the margin.
Wolves' tight 1-0 victory against Watford saw our model get both outcome and halftime calls right with appropriate confidence. Not bad for a day peppered with misses.
Overall, today's batch of Championship fixtures gave our model plenty to chew on. With zero STARs but five TICKs among six misses, it shows we’re getting some calls right but still have room to improve on exact scores and BTTS predictions. Overconfidence seems to have been a recurring theme in those misses—lesson learned?
