A Mixed Bag in the Championship: Fipster Nails Five but Misses Six
The Fipster model had a day of highs and lows across 11 Championship fixtures, correctly calling the outcome in nearly half but struggling with exact scores and BTTS predictions. Highlights include Birmingham's solid win over QPR and Wrexham's surprise four-goal haul, while Bristol City and Sheffield Utd's clash proved a tough nut to crack.
Today’s Championship round served up a proper rollercoaster for the Fipster model. Out of 11 fixtures, it managed to tick five outcomes right, but also missed six times — so not quite the crystal ball we hoped for.
Birmingham’s 3-0 victory over QPR was one of the brighter spots, with the model correctly predicting the winner and that the match would stay under the goal threshold. It fluffed the exact score and BTTS calls, but we’ll take that one.
Wrexham’s emphatic 4-1 win against Preston also earned a tick. The model got the outcome right, spotted both teams would score, and nailed the over-under call — though it underestimated just how many goals would fly in.
Watford’s 2-0 win over Charlton was another success story. Here, the model even got the halftime prediction spot on, despite being underconfident overall. A rare moment of humility from our algorithm.
On the flip side, Bristol City’s narrow loss to Sheffield United was a complete miss across all prediction dimensions — a reminder that football keeps us humble.
Several other matches saw overconfidence trip up our model, especially when predicting exact scores or BTTS outcomes — notably Middlesbrough vs Cardiff and Millwall vs Lincoln. Sometimes it’s better to be cautious than cocky.
Overall, today’s results show our model is decent at calling winners but less reliable on finer details like exact scores or whether both teams find the net. Still, five ticks out of eleven isn’t too shabby for a day full of surprises.
