MLS predictions: four ticks, three misses, and a few surprises to chew on
The Fipster model kept us on our toes with a mixed bag of results across seven MLS fixtures. It nailed the outcome in more than half the games but struggled with exact scores and halftime calls. A couple of unexpected draws and scorelines reminded us that football loves to keep its secrets.
Today’s MLS round served up a bit of everything for the Fipster prediction model. The headline? Four solid TICKs showing the model got the match outcomes right, even if it wasn’t always spot-on with exact scores or halftime predictions. We’ll take those wins where we can get them.
FC Dallas edged out Seattle Sounders 1-0, exactly as predicted for the winner but not quite on the scoreline or halftime call — underconfident but correct on outcome. Chicago Fire versus Philadelphia Union ended 1-3, and here the model was appropriately confident, getting outcome, BTTS, and over/under right despite missing halftime accuracy.
Nashville SC’s 4-0 win over Sporting Kansas City was another tick in the box: outcome correct, BTTS and over/under nailed too, though exact score and halftime slipped away. Meanwhile, Los Angeles FC’s 3-1 victory against Austin was predicted as a home win but underestimated on goals scored — underconfident again but outcome accurate.
On the flip side, Colorado Rapids’ 2-2 draw with Minnesota United caught the model off guard — an overconfident call that missed outcome and exact score but got BTTS and over/under right. Real Salt Lake versus San Jose Earthquakes also ended in a draw (1-1), another overconfident miss on outcome and exact score despite a correct halftime prediction.
San Diego versus Houston Dynamo rounded out the day with a thrilling 3-3 draw that slipped past the model’s grasp entirely on outcome and exact score, though BTTS and over/under were spot-on. This one was appropriately rated but still a miss.
Overall, no STAR grades today but four TICKs show the model had its day more often than not. Outcome predictions were generally reliable; exact scores and halftime calls less so. Confidence ratings varied from under to overconfident without a clear pattern — just like football itself.
