A day of surprises and near misses in the Nations League
The Fipster model had a mixed bag on October 2nd, nailing three predictions but missing out on seven. While it got the outcomes right for Hungary, Poland, and Cyprus, some unexpected results from Belgium and Ukraine kept things lively. A day that tested the model’s mettle, with a few winks and nods along the way.
October 2nd served up a Nations League smorgasbord where the Fipster model found itself more often scratching its head than popping the champagne cork. Out of ten fixtures, only three earned a polite nod with a TICK grade — not quite the star-studded performance we dream of, but hey, we’ll take those wins where we can.
Hungary's narrow 1-0 victory over Georgia was one of those moments where the model got the outcome right despite underestimating the scoreline and halftime dynamics. The confidence rating was underwhelmingly modest, but at least it called the winner correctly.
Poland’s emphatic 6-0 thrashing of Romania also saw the model tip Poland to win, though it didn’t quite foresee such a goal glut. The model was again underconfident but did nail both outcome and over-under calls — impressive when you consider six goals is hardly subtle.
Cyprus managed a tidy 2-0 win against Armenia, matching the model’s predicted outcome even if it missed on exact score and other finer details. At least this time confidence was appropriate — no false modesty here.
On the flip side, Belgium’s 3-0 demolition by Türkiye was a shocker for our trusty predictor — none of the key prediction dimensions landed there. Similarly, Ukraine’s surprise 0-3 loss to Northern Ireland left the model looking decidedly less prescient.
Other fixtures like Kazakhstan vs Moldova and France vs Italy saw partial hits — both nailed BTTS correctly but stumbled on outcomes and exact scores. It seems our model enjoys guessing whether both teams will find the net more than who actually wins.
Overall, with zero STAR grades but three TICKs among seven misses, today’s Nations League action proved a tough nut to crack. The model showed strength in calling outcomes occasionally but struggled with exact scores and halftime predictions. Still, it kept its confidence mostly appropriate or modestly underconfident — no overreach here.
So while it wasn’t a perfect day for Fipster’s crystal ball, there were enough correct calls to keep us cheekily optimistic for next time. After all, predicting football is never dull — especially when you get to admit you got it wrong with style.
