A Mixed Bag in the Championship: Four Ticks, Six Misses

Today’s Championship fixtures served up a feast of unpredictability for the Fipster model, which managed to tick four boxes but missed six times. While it nailed outcomes and halftime calls in some matches, others left it scratching its head, especially with exact scores and BTTS predictions.

The day kicked off with Blackburn edging out Cardiff 2-1, where the model got the outcome right and even called the halftime correctly—solid work there. It also predicted both teams to score and the over-under correctly, though the exact scoreline was a bit off. A tidy performance to start.

Middlesbrough’s narrow 1-0 win over Wolves was another tick in the box. The model correctly predicted the outcome and halftime result but stumbled on BTTS and over-under calls. Still, calling a clean sheet win is no small feat.

Preston’s 0-1 loss to Millwall saw the model underconfident but ultimately correct on outcome and halftime predictions. It missed on exact score and BTTS, but we’ll take that one given the surprise factor.

Swansea’s 2-1 victory against Norwich also earned a tick with an accurate outcome call and correct over-under prediction. Halftime was less precise, but overall a decent shout from Fipster.

On the flip side, Bolton’s 1-2 defeat by Stoke City was a miss for the model, which got the outcome wrong despite correctly predicting both teams would score and the over-under. Halftime prediction also missed its mark here.

Sheffield United’s emphatic 3-0 win over Lincoln was a shocker for Fipster, which confidently tipped a Lincoln win instead. Confidence was high but accuracy low—proof that even models can get caught out by football’s unpredictability.

Watford’s heavy 0-4 loss to Burnley was another miss where confidence didn’t pay off. The model expected Watford to come out on top but got every key dimension wrong except over-under.

Other misses included draws between Charlton and Bristol City as well as Derby and Wrexham, plus West Brom losing at home to Birmingham—all games where outcome predictions faltered despite some correct calls on BTTS or over-under.

'All told, today’s batch of ten fixtures yielded zero STAR grades but four TICKs—a respectable showing amid six misses. The model tended to nail outcomes and halftime results when it got things right but struggled with exact scores and BTTS consistency.'
