Austin and LAFC gave MLS Round 16 its clearest answers, while San Jose made a mess of the rest
Five correct calls is respectable enough, but this round was really about the model getting the right teams for the wrong reasons in places, then being properly mugged by San Jose and Houston. The cleanest hits came from Austin, Nashville, Sporting Kansas City, Colorado and LAFC; the ugliest miss was San Jose, where Orlando City SC’s scorers were all off the pre-match sheet.
Austin and LAFC set the tone; San Jose set the trap
The round did not flatter the model, but it did at least tell a coherent story. It found five correct scorelines and kept landing on the right sort of home win, yet it also spent too much time trusting familiar scorers and not enough time noticing when a different name was about to steal the afternoon. That is how you end up with a decent-looking return that still feels slightly bruised.
The Austin call worked because the scorer logic held up
Austin against Seattle Sounders was one of the better reads because the model did not just like Austin at home; it liked Austin’s attacking names for sensible reasons. Myrto Uzuni was called, Christian Ramirez was called, and both scored. That matters more than the final scoreline itself. The post-match data backed up the idea that Austin’s forward line would do enough even if Seattle found a way through once. Ilie Sánchez and Ervin Torres were not part of the pre-match scoring map, but they did not break it either; they simply made Austin’s win look more comfortable than expected.
San Jose was where the model got too attached to its own favourites
The worst miss came in San Jose. The model leaned on Preston Judd, Timo Werner, Martín Ojeda and Luis Otávio; Orlando City SC then turned up with four goals from David Brekalo, Iván Angulo Cortés, Antoine Griezmann and Braian Martín Braian Ojeda Rodríguez instead. That is not a small correction. It is a full rewrite. The problem was not simply that San Jose lost badly. It was that the forecast over-weighted familiar attacking labels and under-read how quickly Orlando could spread the damage across players Fipster had not named at all. Maxime Crépeau’s big rating only sharpened the point: Orlando were not merely efficient, they were efficient in ways the model had not priced.
The round belonged to named forwards — and to one very rude omission in Miami’s shadow elsewhere
Among the players who actually decided things, Samuel Surridge deserves his place near the top of the page. He was called pre-match and scored Nashville SC’s only goal against CF Montreal, which is exactly what a good call looks like: simple, direct and supported by what happened rather than by wishful thinking. Dejan Joveljić did similar work for Sporting Kansas City, while Son Heung-Min and Dénis Bouanga both justified their billing for Los Angeles FC. Those were proper hits because Fipster had already pointed at them before kick-off.
The misses were just as instructive. Tai Baribo scored for DC United after being called, so that one partly landed even though Houston Dynamo still failed to turn their own attacking ideas into a win. But Héctor Herrera López was unforeseen there, which is exactly why that draw stings: it showed how quickly a match can be decided by someone outside the shortlist. Elsewhere, Patrickson Delgado Villa and Felipe Mora Aliaga popped up for FC Dallas and Portland Timbers respectively after being left out of Fipster’s scoring picture. Those are not random footnotes; they are reminders that this round rewarded breadth more than certainty.
There is still useful work here if it stays suspicious of tidy assumptions
That leaves a fairly plain lesson for next time: keep trusting strong team-level reads when they are backed by specific scorers, but do not let one or two familiar names crowd out evidence that another player is about to take over. This round showed both sides of that habit in quick succession. The model can live with five ticks if it learns from why San Jose went so badly wrong — namely that football does occasionally hand out its lessons with a grin and four different scorers attached.
