Ajax were the only away side to make the model look tidy

The round leaned away from our home picks

This was not a round that rewarded caution for its own sake. We had three correct calls, but they were the sort that needed patience rather than bravado: GO Ahead Eagles got there by more than the 2-1 we wrote down, Heerenveen won by the narrow margin we expected, and AZ Alkmaar did at least keep faith with a home win. The rest of the card was less forgiving. Several matches that looked like neat little home edges turned into away wins, draws, or something messier, and the model spent much of the afternoon admiring its own tidy margins while the actual scores went looking for trouble elsewhere.

The one call that held up best: GO Ahead Eagles over Willem II

The best hit was not just the result, but the shape of it. We backed GO Ahead Eagles to beat Willem II 2-1, and they ended up winning 4-1. That still counts as a clean read on the direction of travel. The model had seen enough to trust the home side’s edge; what it did not quite price in was how quickly the game would open once GO Ahead Eagles settled. Søren Østergaard Tengstedt scored, Melle Meulensteen scored and assisted, Mathis Suray supplied two assists, and Erik Hovden Flataker joined in as well. In other words: the right side won for the right reasons, only with a bit more appetite than our scoreline suggested.

Where we overcooked it: PSV Eindhoven against Fortuna Sittard

The miss that stung most was PSV Eindhoven-Fortuna Sittard. We had PSV down for a narrow home win; instead it finished 2-2 after Édouard Michut equalised late for Fortuna Sittard. The mistake was not simply backing PSV. It was over-weighting control and under-weighting how much one away goal could change the whole evening once Fortuna Sittard stayed alive into the final stretch. Noah Fernandez looked like he might rescue the call when he scored for PSV Eindhoven, but Ole ter Haar Romeny had already done his part for Fortuna Sittard and Édouard Michut made sure there was no neat ending. The model liked structure; this match preferred stubbornness.

The names that actually moved things around

A few players did most of the damage to our assumptions. Noah Naujoks scored twice for Excelsior and Irakli Yegoian added a goal and an assist in that 4-0 win at Cambuur; none of them were among Fipster’s pre-match scorer calls there, which tells you how badly that one escaped us early. Julian Brandt came off the bench to score for Ajax at PEC Zwolle, another unforeseen name on a day when Ajax’s late control mattered more than any pre-match comfort blanket. Brynjólfur Andersen Willumsson set Groningen on their way against Utrecht, while Luca Oyen gave Heerenveen the only goal against Twente. On the positive side for Fipster’s player reads across this round, there were no called scorers to celebrate in these fixtures because no scorer calls were made at all; that makes the standouts themselves even more important as evidence of where individual quality decided games without warning us first.

So the lesson is fairly plain. The model found some correct home wins, but it leaned too hard on close-score comfort and too little on how often this round turned on early goals, late equaliser chances, or one player arriving from outside the expected cast list. That is fixable work rather than catastrophe, which is usually how these things go when you are honest about them. Next round needs less faith in neat margins and more respect for whichever forward has decided to ruin everyone’s afternoon before half-time.
