A tidy away lean, then a few home comforts went missing

The round mostly rewarded caution, until it didn’t

This was a round where Fipster’s away bias did a lot of the heavy lifting. The model kept finding visiting sides with enough edge to win, and in several cases it was right about the direction even if the scoreline wandered. That said, the home favourites were not especially obliging. Two of them were held, one was beaten by a wider margin than expected, and another needed a late rescue just to avoid making the page look even grumpier than it already did. Not a disaster. More a reminder that football remains stubbornly uninterested in tidy spreadsheets.

The call that landed cleanly

Sparta Rotterdam’s away win over Telstar was the clearest example of the model reading the match properly. Fipster backed an away victory and got the basic shape right: Sparta were ahead early, stayed in front after the break, and finished with enough cushion to make the result feel earned rather than accidental. The post-match data backs that up nicely. Marvin Young scored first, Nökkvi Þórisson added another after half-time, and Robin van Cruijsen finished it off late. No player call had been made pre-match, so this was not about a named scorer getting us out of trouble. It was about the model correctly identifying which side had more ways to hurt the other.

Where we overreached

Ajax against Heerenveen is the one that got away from us. The model leaned on a home win and expected something orderly enough to fit a 2-1 script. Instead, Ajax spent much of the afternoon chasing their own mess after an own goal put them behind on paper before they had really settled. They did get back in front for a while, but Heerenveen found another equaliser and took the point. The mistake here was simple: we overweighted Ajax’s ability to manage the game once ahead and underweighted how fragile that control could be if they had to react rather than dictate. A keeper can have a fine rating and still not save you from your own assumptions.

The names that shaped it all

The round’s headline performers mostly came from places Fipster had not specifically pointed at before kick-off, which is part of why this page exists in the first place. Peer Koopmeiners set AZ Alkmaar on their way with a goal and ended up among the standouts; Tjaronn Chefren Chery added both a goal and an assist for NEC Nijmegen; Thom van Bergen did similar work for Groningen; and Ayase Ueda turned up on Feyenoord’s scoresheet despite our pre-match silence on him. Those are exactly the sort of unforeseen scorers that can turn a decent read into a miss or turn a narrow call into something more convincing.

There were also quieter but important contributions from players who did not score yet still shaped results: Mateo Chávez García supplied two assists for AZ Alkmaar, Anis Hadj-Moussa created one for Feyenoord, and Ronald Koeman Jr. kept Telstar respectable with six saves despite Sparta’s win going through anyway. On Fipster’s side of the ledger, there were no pre-match scorer calls to celebrate or regret in these fixtures, which makes the round feel even more like a test of team-level judgement than individual hunches.

What comes next

So the lesson is fairly plain: keep trusting strong away profiles when they are there, but do not get sentimental about home favourites just because they are at home and wearing nice shirts. Round 2 gave Fipster enough correct calls to stay honest about its process, while also showing where control can vanish quickly once an underdog scores first or a favourite starts improvising. Next week will probably offer something different, because football enjoys being difficult for sport. We shall try not to take it personally.
