Championship Round 7: West Ham’s rout, and the scorers Fipster did not see coming
One exact call landed cleanly in Derby, but the round belonged to the names the model left off the page. West Ham’s 6-0 win over Wrexham was the loudest miss; Sebastian Berhalter, Oladapo Afolayan and Manor Solomon did most of the damage elsewhere.
West Ham’s 6-0 demolition of Wrexham was the sort of result that makes a tidy prediction look faintly embarrassed. Fipster had the away win call there, but not by anything like that margin, and certainly not with Jarrod Bowen, Joël Ramzan Piroe and then three more names arriving to turn it into a procession. The round as a whole was decent on outcomes, less so on who would actually do the scoring. That is usually where the trouble starts, and this week it started early.
The one call that held its nerve
Derby against Birmingham was the cleanest hit in the set because the model got both shape and scorer logic right. It called an away win and landed on 1-2, which is one thing; it also trusted a narrow game rather than a loose one, which mattered more. The decisive detail was that Fipster had already identified a route through Birmingham’s attack rather than leaning on a single flashy name. That fit what happened: Birmingham took it by the odd goal, and the only scorer Fipster named who actually scored was enough to keep the call honest. No drama. Elijah Just a prediction doing its job without asking for applause.
Where we over-read the Watford game
Watford-Stoke was the miss that says most about this round. The model leaned hard into Watford at home and into a clean sheet idea that never really survived contact with Stoke’s actual finishing. Amin Nabizada did at least score for Watford, so there was one foothold, but the bigger story was that Jack McGlynn and Eric-Junior Bocat were not in Fipster’s pre-match list at all. That is where the read broke: it over-weighted Watford’s expected control and under-read Stoke’s ability to nick two goals without much ceremony. A 3-0 home forecast can look sensible on paper; it looks less clever when Stoke are walking out with all three points and your model has spent too long admiring Watford from afar.
The players who actually owned the round
The round’s loudest individual story came from players Fipster never properly named up front. Sebastian Berhalter scored twice for Middlesbrough, while Amario Cozier-Duberry added another in a game that turned into a shootout rather than the comfortable home win Fipster had sketched out. Oladapo Afolayan scored twice for Blackburn and made Blackburn-Millwall feel far less orderly than predicted; he was not among Fipster’s called scorers either. Manor Solomon also arrived from outside the pre-match shortlist in West Ham’s rout, adding another goal to a performance that made Wrexham look as if they had taken a wrong turn somewhere near half-time.
There were still useful nods from the model’s own list. Cyle Larin scored twice for Southampton and Finn Azaz added one more contribution to keep that forecast broadly pointed in the right direction. Thierry Gale rescued Bolton’s narrow win late on after being called before kick-off, and Lyndon Dykes also justified his mention with Millwall’s only goal at Blackburn. But this round belonged more to correction than confirmation: Jarrod Bowen hit one of his own in West Ham’s surge, Joël Ramzan Piroe scored as well, and yet even those hits were swallowed by how much damage came from unexpected sources.
What comes next is simpler than panic: trim the certainty around scorelines that depend on one team controlling everything, and keep giving proper weight to players who are turning up uninvited in recent rounds. The model found enough correct results to stay useful; it just spent too many of its misses assuming familiar scorers would keep their appointments. Football remains rude about diaries.
