Championship Round 5: Millwall’s 4-0 and a few wrong scorers told the story

Fipster found one exact scoreline and four useful calls, but the round was mostly decided by the names it did not see coming. Millwall were the cleanest hit; Stoke City, Preston and Norwich supplied the sharper reminders that a decent outcome call is not the same thing as reading the scorers properly.

The round had one clean hit and a lot of awkward footnotes

The best thing Fipster did this week was land Swansea against Wrexham exactly, which is tidy work in a round that otherwise spent much of its time ignoring the model’s preferred scorer list. The broader picture was less flattering: four correct outcome calls, seven misses, and several games where the result was only half the problem. The bigger issue was who actually supplied the goals. That is where this round stopped being about direction and started being about detail.

Millwall was the read that held up best

Millwall’s 4-0 win over Bolton was the clearest case of the model getting the shape right even if it missed the furniture. Fipster had Millwall to win at home, and that part stood up comfortably. The post-match data backs the basic read: Millwall controlled the scoring from late in the first half onward, with Caleb Taylor opening it up before Lyndon Dykes scored twice and Camiel Neghli added a fourth. The model did not call any scorers there, so this was not a player-pick success so much as a clean outcome call that aged well because the home side kept pressing after they had already made life easy for themselves.

Preston showed why scoreline guesses can be too neat by half

The miss that says most about the round was Preston beating Blackburn 2-1. Fipster leaned away from Preston and expected Blackburn to nick it, which is fair enough on paper until Callum Lang scores twice inside half an hour and turns the whole thing into a different sort of afternoon. This was not just a wrong winner; it was a case of over-weighting the away side’s supposed edge while under-reading how quickly Preston could seize control through one player. The own goal that followed only made Blackburn’s task look more awkward, but by then the model had already backed itself into the wrong corner.

The round belonged to players Fipster never named up front

This is where Round 5 really bit back. Lyndon Dykes scored twice for Millwall, yet he was not among Fipster’s pre-match scorer calls. Nor were Caleb Taylor or Camiel Neghli, both of whom ended up on the scoresheet in that same game. Elsewhere, Callum Lang’s brace for Preston was another complete blind spot, while Justin Devenny scored twice for Stoke City in a 4-0 win over Charlton that arrived with no called scorers at all. George Hirst also scored for Stoke City, which only deepened the sense that this round belonged to players who were not supposed to be central to it.

There were still some useful reads tucked away in the noise. West Brom’s 1-0 over Watford matched Fipster’s home-win call even if it never got near the predicted margin, and West Ham beating Derby 3-0 at least preserved the direction of travel despite missing on exact scoreline shape. But Norwich at Sheffield United was another reminder that one early scorer can wreck a tidy forecast quickly: Anthony Musaba struck first, Mohamed Touré added another before half-time, and Mathias Damm Kvistgaarden finished it off after Fipster had backed a comfortable home win with no scorer help at all.

The next round asks for less faith in neat scorelines and more respect for which forwards are actually turning up. That usually helps. Football remains stubbornly rude about it, but then again so do strikers.
