Conference League chaos: Fipster’s mixed bag on a 42-fixture frenzy
With 42 fixtures in the UEFA Europa Conference League's 2nd Qualifying Round, Fipster managed a modest haul of one STAR and fifteen TICKs. Plenty of misses kept things lively, but some spot-on calls remind us the model isn’t just throwing darts.
Today’s Conference League action was a rollercoaster for our trusty Fipster model. Out of 42 matches, it scored one STAR, fifteen TICKs, and twenty-six MISS grades — a reminder that predicting football is never a walk in the park.
The standout STAR came courtesy of The New Saints' narrow 1-0 victory over Flora Tallinn. Fipster nailed every detail except halftime correctness — outcome, exact score, BTTS, and over/under all spot on. A near-perfect crystal ball moment.
Among the reliable TICKs, FC Nordsjaelland’s 6-0 demolition of Gais was impressive. The model correctly predicted the outcome and over/under but missed the exact score and halftime call — still, six goals is hard to miss.
Another solid TICK was Ajax’s 4-1 win against Vojvodina. Outcome and BTTS predictions landed well, as did over/under. The model showed some underconfidence here but got the essentials right.
On the flip side, Beitar Jerusalem’s surprise 2-3 loss to AEK Larnaca was a MISS for Fipster. It expected a home win and was overconfident about it too — proof that even smart models can be caught out by upsets.
BTTS predictions were often correct when goals flowed but less so when matches ended goalless or with unexpected scorelines. Halftime calls were generally the trickiest to get right today.
Confidence ratings varied from underconfident in big wins to overconfident in some misses — a humbling reminder that football keeps us guessing.
All told, not a bad day for Fipster given the sheer volume and variety of results across Europe’s third-tier competition.
