The model found the right sort of winners, then got mugged by the scorelines
Eight correct calls were enough to show the broad read was sound, but the round’s real story was how often the margins turned vicious: Roma and Manchester City both lost games that looked set up for them, while Sabah FA was the one place where a named call landed cleanly.
The broad read held; the details did not
Fipster leaned towards home wins in most of the round, and that part of the picture was not daft at all. Eight of those calls came home. The trouble was that several of the misses were not narrow little slips. They were proper reversals, with away sides not merely nicking points but taking control of the evening and leaving the model staring at its shoes.
That is why this round feels less like a neat correction and more like a warning about over-trusting familiar shapes. A 2-1 home lean can be a sensible starting point in a tight Champions League night. It becomes expensive when the game opens early, or when one side produces a scorer profile the model never really had in view.
Sabah FA gave us the cleanest hit
The best call was Sabah FA against Slavia Praha. Fipster backed Sabah to win, named Joy-Lance Mickels as one of the threats, and that part held up properly. Joy-Lance Mickels scored late to finish the job, which is exactly what a useful pre-match call looks like: not just picking the right side, but identifying one of the people most likely to matter when the match gets awkward and tired.
The model did miss on Veljko Simić and Steve Solvet, so it was not a perfect scorer sheet. But it had enough of Sabah’s attacking pattern right to land on the result and one decisive name. That matters more than pretending every prediction should arrive with bells on.
Roma was where the numbers got ahead of themselves
The clearest wrong turn came in AS Roma against Real Madrid. Fipster saw a home win and no player callouts at all; what actually decided it was a game full of scorers nobody had been asked to watch for. Marten de Roon opened it for Roma, Donyell Malen scored twice, and Real Madrid still found enough through Kylian Mbappé, Carlos Espí and Endrick to take it away from them.
That miss says more than a bad scoreline does. The model over-weighted a tidy home shape and under-weighted how much individual finishing would matter once both sides started trading blows. Donyell Malen’s two goals were the sort of thing that can make any forecast look underfed; Endrick’s late strike only sharpened the point.
The round belonged to names Fipster partly saw — and several it did not
Joy-Lance Mickels was the only called scorer who actually cashed in across this round’s player callouts, so he deserves his nod. But he was joined by a longer list of players who shaped things without being on Fipster’s sheet: Donyell Malen for AS Roma, Nicolò Tresoldi for Club Brugge KV, Lautaro Martínez for Inter, Erling Braut Haaland for Manchester City, Ross Barkley and Nicolas Jackson for Aston Villa, and Masour Dembélé for Paris Saint Germain.
That spread tells you what kind of round this was. The model could still find decent outcome shapes in plenty of fixtures, but it struggled when matches were decided by repeated individual interventions rather than by one neat tactical script. The standout ratings backed that up too: Donyell Malen, Matías Soulé Malvano, Nicolas Jackson, Ross Barkley and Erling Braut Haaland all left their mark in ways Fipster had not properly priced.
What comes next is simple enough
The useful bit is not pretending this round was either brilliant or disastrous. It was mostly accurate on direction and patchy on detail, which is often where Champions League nights do their damage. If Fipster keeps finding the right winners while tightening its read on who actually turns those wins into something messier than expected, there is still plenty to work with.
