Ligue 1 · 2026-27 · Regular Season - 7

Lyon and Paris FC were the clean reads; the rest of Ligue 1 made the model work for its supper

Three calls landed, but the round’s real lesson was harsher: Fipster trusted a few tidy home-win patterns that never arrived, while the goals kept coming from players it had not put front and centre. Lyon and Paris FC justified the confidence. Marseille, Auxerre and Rennes did the damage elsewhere.

The round split neatly between the reads that held and the ones that went missing

Fipster found three correct calls in a nine-match slate, which is respectable enough on paper and rather less comforting once you look at how the misses came about. The model was right where it leaned on stable home strength and individual finishing. It was wrong where it assumed control would stay with the side expected to have it. That is usually where a round starts to bite: not in one catastrophic mistake, but in several ordinary-looking games turning into something else entirely.

Lyon gave the model its best sort of answer

The Lyon win over Nice was the cleanest hit because the pre-match logic survived contact with the match itself. Fipster backed Lyon to score through Ernest Nuamah Appiah, Zachary Athekame and Malick Fofana, and while none of those names ended up on the scoresheet, the broader read still held: Lyon’s attacking pressure produced a home win, and Zachary Athekame’s assist for Francis Tessmann showed why he had been flagged as more than a full-back who merely minds his own business. The model did not need every named scorer to land there; it needed Lyon’s attacking structure to carry them through, and it did.

The miss was harsher in Angers, where the game ran away from the script early

Angers against Marseille was the one that most clearly exposed what Fipster had over-weighted. The call leaned on a narrow home win and on Prosper Peter as a useful attacking reference point. Instead, Marseille’s goals came from elsewhere and in volume: Himad Abdelli scored, Amine Gouiri scored twice across his missed penalty and later finish, and Timothy Tarpeh Weah supplied two assists while looking like the most influential player on the pitch. That is exactly the sort of thing a model can miss when it gives too much credit to one expected scorer and not enough to how quickly a match can tilt once another creator starts pulling strings.

The round belonged to players Fipster either trusted or failed to spot at all

There were two kinds of player story this week. First, the ones Fipster had already identified: Amine Gouiri rewarded that faith for Marseille, Amine El Ouazzani did likewise for Angers, Rayan Fofana scored for Le Havre after being called out pre-match, and Lassine Sinayoko again justified attention by scoring for Paris FC after also setting up Maxime Baila Lopez twice. Those are useful hits because they show the model can still see an attacker who matters before kick-off.

Then came the names Fipster never put in bold enough type. Daniel Edi-Mesumbe Loader took over at Le Havre with two goals and an assist for Auxerre; Esteban Lepaul turned Rennes’ evening into his own with a hat-trick; Masour Dembélé came off PSG’s bench-like role to score twice; Maxime Baila Lopez added two for Paris FC; and Lillian Rao-Lisoa opened Angers’ scoring before Marseille finished their work. That is not just noise around the edges. It is where rounds are won or lost: by recognising which supporting cast member has quietly become central before everyone else notices.

The useful takeaway is simple enough. When Fipster stayed close to clear structural edges — Lyon at home, Paris FC with Lassine Sinayoko involved — it looked sharp. When it leaned too hard on tidy scorelines or assumed familiar scorers would do familiar things, this round punished it without much ceremony. Next week wants less faith in neat margins and more respect for who is actually finishing chances.
