A Day of Near Misses and One Shining Tick in the Nations League

The Fipster model had a tough day in the UEFA Nations League on September 28, nailing just one prediction out of eight fixtures. While it correctly called Sweden's win over Poland, the rest proved trickier, with several scorelines and outcomes defying expectations. Halftime calls were a mixed bag, but the model’s confidence remained appropriately cautious throughout.

Today’s Nations League action was a bit of a rollercoaster for the Fipster model, which managed only one TICK among eight fixtures. The standout success came with Sweden’s 3-1 victory against Poland, where the model got the outcome right and even predicted both teams to score — not bad for an underconfident call.

Unfortunately, that was the exception rather than the rule. Matches like Georgia versus Ukraine and Northern Ireland against Hungary ended goalless, despite predictions favouring home wins with goals. The model did get halftime outcomes correct in those games, so at least it had its finger on the pulse early on.

Other fixtures such as Armenia vs Montenegro and Romania vs Bosnia & Herzegovina saw more goals than expected, with both matches finishing 3-2 and 4-2 respectively — far from the predicted 2-1 results. The model did well to predict both teams would score and that there’d be plenty of goals (over-under calls were spot on), but it missed the mark on who would come out on top.

Italy’s convincing 4-1 win over Türkiye also slipped past Fipster’s radar, which had tipped a closer affair. Again, BTTS and over-under predictions were accurate but not enough to salvage an overall correct outcome call.

Belgium’s narrow loss to France was another surprise for the model — it expected a home win without conceding but instead got both teams scoring and France taking all three points. Confidence ratings stayed appropriate throughout, showing Fipster knew when to tread carefully.

All told, today was a humbling reminder that football can be wonderfully unpredictable. The model nailed some halftime calls and BTTS predictions but struggled with exact scores and final outcomes — not quite the day Fipster hoped for.
