A Mixed Bag in the Europa Conference League: Model Hits and Misses Galore
The Fipster prediction model navigated a rollercoaster of results across 23 fixtures, scoring 10 TICKs but no STARs. While it nailed outcomes in several matches, exact scores and BTTS calls proved trickier, leading to a respectable yet imperfect day.
Today’s Europa Conference League action served up a feast of unpredictability for the Fipster model. Despite the volume of fixtures—23 in total—the model managed to secure 10 TICKs, showing it can still pick its moments, though it didn’t quite reach STAR status this time around.
Among the brighter spots was Ajax’s 5-3 win over FC Sion. The model got the outcome right and even called both teams to score, plus the over-under tally, though it missed the exact score and halftime prediction. That’s a solid all-round effort with an appropriate confidence rating—no bragging, just facts.
Borac Banja Luka’s 3-1 victory against Vikingur Reykjavik also earned a TICK. The outcome was spot on, but BTTS and over-under predictions slipped away. Still, an appropriate confidence rating means the model wasn’t shouting from the rooftops when it shouldn’t have been.
Brann edged out PAOK 3-2 with another TICK for the model. It correctly predicted the winner and that both teams would find the net, as well as the goal range. Interestingly, this came with an underconfident rating—sometimes even Fipster surprises itself.
On the flip side, some misses were hard to ignore. Hapoel Tel Aviv’s shock 0-1 loss to Atalanta was one such example where the model confidently predicted a home win but got caught out. Similarly, Brighton’s 4-0 demolition of Tromso defied expectations as Fipster had tipped a Tromso win.
Overall, while exact scores proved elusive across many fixtures, outcome predictions held up better than some other dimensions like BTTS and halftime calls. The model showed caution where needed but occasionally leaned too heavily on confidence that didn’t pay off.
So, no STAR performances today but plenty of TICKs to keep us hopeful. A day of highs and lows that reminds us football is wonderfully unpredictable—and so is predicting it.
