MLS predictions took a bit of a bumpy ride on September 20th
With only four out of ten matches hitting the mark, Fipster's model showed flashes of brilliance but mostly kept us guessing. The model nailed outcome and BTTS calls in some high-scoring affairs, yet struggled with exact scores and halftime predictions across the board. Overconfidence was a recurring theme in those misses, but hey, even the best get caught offside now and then.
September 20th in Major League Soccer was a day where our trusty prediction model had to swallow a few surprises. Out of ten fixtures, it scored four TICKs—solid calls on outcomes and goal patterns—but missed the mark six times, proving that soccer remains as unpredictable as ever.
Spotlight on Sporting Kansas City versus Philadelphia Union: a 3-4 thriller where the model correctly predicted the outcome, BTTS, and over/under goals, though it couldn’t quite nail the exact score or halftime result. A respectable showing with an appropriate confidence rating.
St. Louis City’s 3-1 win over Toronto FC also earned a TICK, with accurate outcome and BTTS calls plus correct over/under predictions. Confidence was well placed here, even if halftime accuracy slipped through the cracks.
Real Salt Lake’s surprising 0-3 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps was another bright spot for the model: it got outcome and halftime right and called the over/under correctly too. Not bad for a match that might have raised some eyebrows.
Nashville SC’s solid 3-0 victory against Chicago Fire rounded out the TICKs with accurate outcome and over/under calls. The model played it safe with appropriate confidence here — we’ll take that one.
On the flip side, some matches like Minnesota United FC versus LA Galaxy (2-3) saw the model confidently predict a home win that didn’t materialize. Overconfidence reared its head again in several misses including Portland Timbers’ narrow loss to Atlanta United FC (0-1) and Inter Miami’s draw with San Diego (2-2). BTTS calls were often off when goals were scarce or unexpectedly plentiful.
Halftime predictions were generally elusive today; only Real Salt Lake versus Vancouver Whitecaps saw this dimension correctly forecasted alongside other metrics. It seems our model prefers full-time drama over half-time teasers.
All told, Fipster’s record for this MLS regular season round stands at zero STARs but four solid TICKs amid six misses — enough to keep us entertained without breaking out the party hats just yet.
