MLS Day of Close Calls and One Solid Shout from Fipster

Four matches, one tick, three misses — the model’s crystal ball was a bit foggy today, but it did spot a tight win for DC United over Charlotte. Goals flew in, but the exact scores mostly slipped through our fingers.

Today’s Major League Soccer fixtures served up a mixed bag for the Fipster model. The highlight was DC United’s narrow 2-1 victory against Charlotte, where the model nailed the outcome and correctly predicted both teams would score and the match would be over the total goals line. It was an underconfident call that paid off nicely — we’ll take that one.

The rest of the day was less kind. San Jose Earthquakes and Los Angeles FC drew 2-2, but the model had pegged a 2-1 win for San Jose — it got the both-teams-to-score and over-under calls right, though, so not all was lost. CF Montreal versus Columbus Crew ended 0-2, a result that completely confounded predictions which had Montreal winning 3-2; confidence was high here, so this miss stings a bit.

New England Revolution’s 4-2 win over Orlando City SC also caught the model out. It expected Orlando to edge it 3-2 but instead saw New England secure a high-scoring triumph. Again, both teams scored and the match went over the goal line as predicted — small mercies.

Overall, four fixtures yielded no STAR grades but one TICK and three MISSes. The model showed strength in calling goal-scoring patterns (both teams to score and over/under), while exact outcomes and halftime predictions were tougher nuts to crack today. A day of near misses with just enough hits to keep us cheekily optimistic.
