A Mixed Bag in MLS: Model Nails Some Upsets, Trips Over Others
The Fipster model had a day of highs and lows across nine MLS fixtures on August 30, 2026. It scored four TICKs, correctly predicting outcomes in matches like Nashville SC’s 4-0 rout of FC Cincinnati and San Diego’s 3-1 win over LA Galaxy. But five misses remind us that even the best models have off days — especially when it comes to exact scores and halftime calls.
Today’s MLS slate served up a proper rollercoaster for the Fipster prediction model. While it didn’t bag any STAR grades, it did notch four TICKs — a respectable haul given the unpredictability of the league.
Nashville SC’s emphatic 4-0 victory over FC Cincinnati was one of the model’s better calls. It got the outcome right, spotted the over-under correctly, and even nailed the halftime prediction. Not bad at all.
Sporting Kansas City falling 0-3 to Vancouver Whitecaps was another TICK. The model called the winner and total goals range but missed on exact score and BTTS — understandable misses given the shutout.
San Diego’s 3-1 win against LA Galaxy also earned a TICK. Outcome, BTTS, and over-under were spot on; just shy on exact score and halftime.
Colorado Rapids edged Real Salt Lake 1-0 with another TICK. Outcome and BTTS predictions held firm despite missing out on some other details.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The model missed on five fixtures including Columbus Crew losing 1-3 to New England Revolution — where it got outcome wrong but did predict both teams would score and the total goals range correctly.
Minnesota United FC versus Orlando City SC ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw that caught the model off guard on outcome and halftime calls, though it did predict BTTS and over-under accurately.
Houston Dynamo’s goalless draw with San Jose Earthquakes was another miss — an overconfident call for a home win that didn’t materialise.
Portland Timbers’ narrow loss to Austin and St. Louis City’s high-scoring draw with FC Dallas rounded out the misses, both games where BTTS was predicted correctly but outcomes were not.
Overall, today was a reminder that while the Fipster model can pick winners with reasonable confidence (appropriate ratings mostly), exact scores and halftime predictions remain tricky territory.
