Fipster came out of Round 2 with only two ticks from twelve, and that is about right for a weekend that kept turning narrow away wins into something less polite. The model leaned hard on visiting sides in several places, but the round kept producing home resistance, late swings and a few scorelines that were simply more stubborn than the numbers suggested. The useful part is not that the model was wrong often. It is that it was wrong in a fairly revealing way: it kept trusting the same sort of away edge even when the actual goals were arriving from elsewhere.

Millwall was the cleanest read in the lot

The best hit was Millwall’s 3-0 win over Norwich. Fipster had Millwall down for a narrow home win, and that basic shape held because the model got the direction right even if it did not name any scorers. The post-match data explains why it landed: Taïryk Arconte scored twice and finished with an 8.5 rating, while Luke Cundle added the third. That is exactly the sort of game where a modest home lean can look smarter than a fancier theory. Once Taïryk Arconte struck first, Norwich never really forced the issue back into balance.

The miss that mattered most was not just one scoreline going astray

If there was one fixture that summed up where the model overreached, it was West Brom against Burnley. Fipster saw an away win; instead West Brom won 3-1, helped by Callum Styles turning one into his own net before Harry Whitwell and Isaac Price took over. The mistake was not merely picking Burnley. It was over-valuing a neat away pattern when West Brom had enough direct match-deciding quality to break it open early and then add control through Isaac Price’s second-half penalty. Max Weiß did his bit in defeat with a strong rating, which only made the home side’s finishing look more decisive.

The round belonged to players Fipster never properly named up front

That is where this round gets interesting. The player callouts were all off-piste: Isaac Price scored twice for West Brom without being called pre-match; Taïryk Arconte did the same for Millwall; Fer López scored twice for Wolves; Cyle Larin scored for Southampton; Ebrima Adams scored for Portsmouth; Reeco Hackett-Fairchild scored for Lincoln; Demarai Gray scored for Birmingham; Todd Cantwell scored for Blackburn. In other words, the round’s decisive names were mostly unforeseen rather than forecast. Even where Fipster got a result right, as with Millwall, it was because the team read held rather than because any individual scorer call bailed it out. That matters. It tells you this was less a failure of broad direction than a failure to catch who would actually do the finishing.

There were also plenty of matches where no scorer call existed at all, which makes some misses feel almost structural rather than unlucky. QPR against Bolton finished goalless after an away-win prediction; Swansea against Sheffield United stayed blank too; West Ham lost at home to Charlton after Lloyd Jones struck early and nobody in Fipster’s pre-match notes had him down as the difference-maker. That is not one bad bounce. It is a reminder that low-confidence away picks can look tidy on paper and still leave you staring at an empty scoresheet.

The next job is obvious enough: keep respecting close games, but stop assuming they will resolve in favour of the travelling side just because that is where the probabilities nudge them first. Round 2 gave Fipster two decent reads and a long list of lessons attached to them. Not glamorous work, but useful work — which is usually how calibration earns its supper.
