Nations League throws a curveball as Fipster splits the day with four hits and four misses
Eight fixtures, eight chances for Fipster to shine or stumble. The model nailed the outcome in half the matches but struggled with exact scores and halftime calls, ending the day with a balanced mix of triumphs and slip-ups.
Today’s Nations League action served up a mixed bag for our beloved Fipster model. Out of eight fixtures, it managed to score a respectable four TICKs but also stumbled on four MISSes — no STAR performances this time around. The headline moment? Norway edging Denmark 3-2, where Fipster confidently predicted the outcome and even got both teams to score right, proving it still has some tricks up its sleeve.
Portugal’s narrow 1-0 win over Wales was another feather in the model’s cap. It correctly called the match outcome and halftime prediction, though it missed out on the exact score and whether both teams would find the net. That underconfident confidence rating looks more like modesty than doubt here.
Austria’s 3-1 victory against Israel also earned a TICK, with Fipster getting outcome, BTTS, and over/under calls spot on — just not the halftime score. Similarly, Kosovo’s 1-0 win over Republic of Ireland was predicted correctly for outcome but missed other finer details.
On the flip side, some results caught Fipster off guard. The Netherlands-Germany draw (1-1) defied its prediction of a Dutch win; Serbia losing to Greece (1-2) was another upset for the model; Liechtenstein falling 0-2 to Lithuania; and Andorra’s narrow loss to Malta all slipped through its fingers despite appropriate confidence ratings.
Across the board, Fipster showed strength in calling match outcomes when it got them right but less so in nailing exact scores or halftime leads. Both teams scoring was often predicted correctly when present but not always. Over/under predictions were hit or miss depending on the fixture.
All told, today’s Nations League fixtures reminded us that even clever models have their off days — but four solid ticks out of eight isn’t too shabby at all. We’ll take that one with a wink and look forward to more surprises ahead.
