A Day of Near Misses and a Few Solid Calls in the Conference League
The Fipster model faced a tough day predicting the UEFA Europa Conference League fixtures on August 20, 2026, with only five correct outcome calls out of 24 matches. While exact scores largely eluded it, the model showed some skill in spotting match outcomes and BTTS scenarios in a handful of games, though overconfidence led to several misses.
Today’s Conference League action was a bit of a rollercoaster for our trusty Fipster prediction model. Out of 24 fixtures, it managed to bag five TICKs but not a single STAR — proof that even the cleverest algorithms have their off days.
SC Braga’s 2-0 win over Austria Vienna was one of the brighter spots. The model nailed the outcome and got both teams to score right, plus the over-under call was spot on — all while being underconfident. That’s like guessing you’ll fail an exam and then acing it.
FC Lugano’s narrow 2-1 victory against Maccabi Tel Aviv also earned a TICK. Outcome and halftime predictions were correct, though exact score and BTTS slipped through the cracks. Not bad for a day when most predictions felt like shots in the dark.
Meanwhile, Rangers’ 1-0 win over FK Jablonec saw the model get the outcome right again but miss on other finer details. Consistency in outcome calls is something we’ll take as a small win.
On the flip side, Atalanta versus Hapoel Tel Aviv ended goalless, completely defying the model’s confident prediction of a home win with goals. Overconfidence was clearly not rewarded here.
Other matches like Gent vs Hibernian and Getafe vs FK Partizan also tripped up our model, which struggled particularly with exact scores and BTTS calls across many fixtures. The confidence ratings often didn’t match reality — sometimes too bold, sometimes just plain wrong.
Overall, today was a humbling reminder that football loves to keep us guessing. With zero STARs but five TICKs among nineteen misses, it wasn’t our finest hour but at least we had some moments to celebrate.
Day grade: C+.
