NEC Nijmegen's spot-on draw steals the show in a mixed bag of predictions
The Fipster model had a day of highs and lows across ten UEFA Champions League qualifiers, nailing one perfect scoreline while stumbling on four. From underconfident calls to a couple of overconfident blunders, the model kept us entertained with its mix of hits and misses.
Today’s highlight was NEC Nijmegen holding Olympiakos Piraeus to a 1-1 draw — exactly as predicted, down to the very goal. The model got everything right here: outcome, exact score, both teams scoring, over-under, and even halftime correctness. A rare moment when all the stars aligned (literally, it earned a STAR grade). We’ll take that one with a smug smile.
Several fixtures earned TICKs for getting the outcome right but missing out on exact scores or halftime calls. Bodo/Glimt versus Union St. Gilloise finished 2-2 with the model correctly predicting a draw and both teams scoring, though it underestimated the away side’s tally. Lyon’s 3-0 win over Sparta Praha was another solid call on outcome and over-under but no BTTS this time.
Sabah FA’s convincing 4-0 victory against Aarhus was also well forecasted for outcome and BTTS, despite the exact score being off by a goal. Slovan Bratislava’s 2-0 win over Mjallby AIF followed a similar pattern — outcome nailed but halftime prediction missed.
On the flip side, four MISS grades remind us that even clever models have their off days. FK Crvena Zvezda and Kairat Almaty both lost unexpectedly at home despite confident predictions otherwise — an overconfident trap for our algorithm. Kauno Žalgiris and Sturm Graz also defied expectations with narrow defeats where the model failed to predict outcomes or BTTS correctly.
Overall, today’s batch showed the model’s strength in calling outcomes correctly more often than not (six times), but it struggled with exact scores and halftime results. Confidence ratings varied from underconfident cautiousness to some overly bold guesses that didn’t pay off. Still, with one STAR and five TICKs out of ten fixtures, we’ll happily slap an A- on this day’s report card.
