Champions League Qualifiers Serve Up a Mixed Bag for Fipster
Eight fixtures, eight stories: from Sparta Praha's spot-on prediction to Olympiakos and NEC Nijmegen's unexpected stalemate, Fipster's model had its share of triumphs and tribulations in the 3rd Qualifying Round.
Today’s Champions League qualifiers delivered a rollercoaster for our trusty Fipster model. The standout moment? Sparta Praha’s 2-1 victory over Lyon, where the model nailed every key prediction dimension except halftime correctness — exact score, outcome, BTTS, and over/under all spot on. It’s like the model brought its A-game but forgot its halftime notes at home.
Levski Sofia also impressed with a precise call on their narrow 1-0 win against Kairat Almaty, matching exact score and outcome while correctly predicting both teams to score (or rather not) and the over/under. Meanwhile, Ararat-Armenia and Dinamo Zagreb secured TICK grades by getting the outcomes right even if the exact scores proved elusive.
On the flip side, Olympiakos Piraeus versus NEC Nijmegen was a bit of a curveball — predicted as a home win but ending goalless. Similarly, Union St. Gilloise and Bodo/Glimt’s thrilling 3-3 draw defied expectations of a home victory. Mjallby AIF’s loss to Slovan Bratislava also caught the model off guard despite some correct BTTS and over/under calls.
Overall, Fipster clocked up 2 STARs, 3 TICKs, and 3 MISSes across these eight fixtures — a respectable haul given the unpredictability of qualifiers. The model showed strength in outcome predictions but found exact scores and BTTS trickier to pin down consistently. Confidence ratings mostly matched reality with no glaring mismatches today.
So while it wasn’t perfect, we’ll take that one with a wink and look forward to sharpening those edges as the competition heats up. Day grade: A-.
