Porto and Gil Vicente keep the model onside, but Benfica and Moreirense throw a spanner in the works
A mixed bag from the Fipster prediction model today in Primeira Liga's opening round: two solid TICKs for FC Porto and Gil Vicente, but Benfica and Moreirense managed to surprise with draws against predicted winners. The model nailed outcomes twice but missed exact scores and halftime calls more often than not.
Today’s Primeira Liga action served up a classic case of "close but no cigar" for our trusty Fipster model. While it confidently backed FC Porto and Gil Vicente to win their matches, those predictions came with a side of underconfidence — the exact scores and halftime calls didn’t quite land, but hey, a TICK is still a pat on the back.
Porto’s 2-0 victory over Alverca was spot on in terms of outcome, though the model underestimated their clean sheet by predicting Alverca would grab one. Meanwhile, Gil Vicente edged out Rio Ave 1-0, with the model correctly calling both outcome and halftime result — finally some halftime accuracy to celebrate!
On the flip side, Benfica and Moreirense both defied expectations by drawing 2-2 against Academico Viseu and SC Braga respectively. The model had pegged them as winners with 2-1 scorelines, so these results earned a MISS grade. However, it did get some things right: both matches saw goals at both ends and went over the predicted goal totals — so at least it wasn’t completely off base.
Halftime predictions were the Achilles’ heel today, missing in three of four fixtures. Confidence ratings mostly hovered around appropriate or underconfident levels — perhaps the model was playing it safe in this opening round.
All told, two TICKs and two MISSes make for a day that wasn’t quite perfect but certainly not disastrous. We’ll take those moments of correctness where we can get them — after all, football is famously unpredictable.
