Orlando City SC’s clean sheet saves the day for Fipster in a tough MLS round
Five matches, one tick, and four misses — the model had a rough go on September 12th. Orlando City SC’s 3-0 win over Toronto FC was the lone bright spot, with the model nailing outcome and halftime predictions despite underestimating the scoreline. Elsewhere, high-scoring draws and unexpected results left Fipster scratching its head.
September 12th in Major League Soccer was a day where our trusty Fipster model found itself more often offside than on target. Out of five fixtures, only one earned a tick — Orlando City SC’s convincing 3-0 victory over Toronto FC. The model correctly predicted the outcome and halftime result, even if it was a bit shy on the exact score and over-under call. We'll take that one as a win.
The other four matches were less kind to our algorithmic friend. Inter Miami versus Nashville SC ended in a 2-2 draw, but Fipster had confidently forecasted a Miami win by three goals to one — talk about being overconfident! At least it got both teams to score and the over-under right, so not all was lost.
FC Cincinnati and Charlotte served up another six-goal thriller finishing 3-3. The model predicted a high-scoring affair but missed the outcome entirely. Meanwhile, Columbus Crew’s narrow 0-1 defeat to New York Red Bulls caught Fipster out completely; it had expected a comfortable home win and didn’t foresee the shutout or lack of goals.
Finally, DC United and Atlanta United FC played out a goalless draw that no one saw coming from our model’s perspective — it had forecasted a 3-2 home win with goals aplenty. Not even halftime predictions saved this one.
Overall, today’s record stands at zero stars, one tick, and four misses. The model showed some strength in predicting whether both teams would score and total goals going over or under but struggled with exact outcomes and halftime calls. It seems confidence levels didn’t always match reality either — sometimes too bold, sometimes too cautious.
A challenging day for Fipster fans but plenty of learning opportunities ahead. Until next time!
