A Day for the Model to Rethink Its Life Choices in MLS
Seven matches, one tick, and six misses. The Fipster model fancied home wins across the board but was mostly left holding the bag — except for FC Cincinnati's narrow victory over New York City FC. BTTS and over-under calls were more reliable than outcome predictions today.
The highlight of the day was FC Cincinnati's 2-1 win against New York City FC, where the model got the outcome right and nailed both BTTS and over-under calls. It missed the exact score and halftime prediction, but we'll take that one as a solid tick.
Unfortunately, that was the only fixture where the model got close to spot on. Philadelphia Union versus Inter Miami ended 2-2, but despite correctly calling both teams to score and the match going over the predicted goal line, it missed the outcome and exact score — a classic case of being "overconfident".
The rest of the day was a parade of misses: Columbus Crew lost 1-2 to CF Montreal, New York Red Bulls fell 0-1 to Nashville SC, Orlando City SC went down 1-2 against Chicago Fire, Toronto FC drew 3-3 with Charlotte, and DC United were hammered 0-3 by New England Revolution. The model stubbornly predicted home wins with higher scores in every case — confidence rating: overconfident indeed.
Across these fixtures, BTTS calls were mostly on point except for two matches where neither side scored or both didn't find the net as expected. Over-under predictions fared better overall but couldn't save the day from a poor outcome hit rate.
Halftime predictions were universally off today — not a single correct call there — which might explain some of the model’s woes in reading early match dynamics.
So, summing up: one tick out of seven is not exactly headline material for Fipster’s predictive prowess. But hey, even a broken clock is right twice a day — just not this time around.
