Ligue 1’s unpredictability keeps Fipster on its toes with a mixed bag of calls

Five fixtures, five different stories for the model: two solid ticks, three misses including a surprising 5-1 thrashing. The model nailed some outcomes but struggled with exact scores and halftime predictions, proving once again that football loves to keep us guessing.

Today’s Ligue 1 action served up a feast of surprises, none bigger than Stade Brestois 29’s 5-1 demolition of Angers. Our model confidently tipped an Angers win, which makes this one a classic miss — overconfident and outfoxed by the scoreline. At least it got the both-teams-to-score and over-under calls right, so not all was lost.

Lille versus Le Havre was a quieter affair but a more satisfying one for our prediction efforts. The model correctly called Lille to win, though it overshot the scoreline and missed on both teams scoring and the over-under mark. Still, an underconfident call that turned out well — we’ll take that tick.

Lorient’s narrow 1-0 victory over Paris FC caught the model off guard entirely. It predicted a Paris FC win with goals at both ends and plenty of scoring overall — none of which came true except for the halftime prediction being spot on. A miss here reminds us that even appropriate confidence ratings don’t guarantee success.

Monaco and Toulouse shared four goals in a 2-2 draw, another result that slipped through the model’s fingers. It expected Monaco to edge it with more goals scored overall but did correctly predict both teams would find the net and that there’d be plenty of goals. So close yet so far — halftime prediction missed again.

Paris Saint Germain managed a 3-1 win over Le Mans, matching the model’s outcome call perfectly. While exact score and halftime predictions didn’t land, the model got both teams scoring and total goals right — a tidy tick to round off the day.

Overall, today’s Ligue 1 round was a rollercoaster for our trusty Fipster model: no stars but two ticks among three misses. The hits came mostly on outcomes and goal-related calls like BTTS and over-under, while exact scores and halftime predictions proved trickier than usual. Still, we’ll wear our B grade with pride — after all, predicting football is never dull.
