NEOM and Al-Hilal did the heavy lifting while the rest of the round made a nuisance of itself

Fipster found two clean calls in Pro League Round 7, but the bigger story was how often the goals came from names it had not backed. NEOM’s win over Al-Fateh rewarded the model’s read on Alexandre Lacazette, yet Al-Hilal’s six-goal surge and a string of scoreless draws elsewhere showed where the pre-match lens was too narrow.

The round split neatly: two good calls, four wrong ones, and a lot of damage done by players the model had left out of frame.

That is the awkward bit for any prediction column. The broad shape was not absurd — away wins were still live in places, home sides were still expected to carry more of the ball in others — but the round kept punishing overconfidence in familiar scorers. Several matches finished level or flipped on goals from less obvious sources, which is usually where a model starts looking clever in theory and merely tidy in practice. This time it looked tidy only twice.

NEOM was the one call that actually held together

The best hit came at NEOM, where Fipster backed Alexandre Lacazette and Amadou Koné to matter. They did exactly that. Alexandre Lacazette scored twice, Amadou Koné added one, and NEOM ended up with four goals rather than the neat little 2-0 the model sketched out. The important part is not that the scoreline was off by a couple of goals; it is that the underlying read was right. NEOM’s main attacking names were still the ones most likely to decide it, and they did. That is what a good call looks like: not perfect arithmetic, but the right people turning up in the decisive moments.

The miss at Al Taawon came from trusting the wrong sort of certainty

If one result summed up the round’s bad habits, it was Al Taawon against Al-Hilal Saudi FC. Fipster leaned on Sergej Milinković-Savić, Abderrazzaq Hamed Allah and Rúben Neves to supply a narrow away win. Instead, Al-Hilal ran away with it 6-0 and did so through Oliver Watkins and Gabriel Martinelli, with Sultan Mandash adding the final touch. The model over-weighted established scoring patterns and under-weighted how much damage could come from other attackers once Al-Hilal got rolling. That is a fair mistake to make on paper; it is still a mistake. When three different scorers are all outside your call list, you have not just missed a result — you have missed where the danger actually lived.

The round belonged to players who were either properly flagged or completely uninvited by Fipster.

Alexandre Lacazette was the clearest example of a pre-match call paying rent. So was Amadou Koné. Both were named before kick-off and both scored for NEOM, which is exactly why those calls matter more than any tidy scoreline guess. On the other side of the ledger sat Gabriel Martinelli and Oliver Watkins for Al-Hilal Saudi FC, plus Omar Mascarell for Al Khaleej Saihat and Abdullah Al Hamdan for Al-Nassr — all unforeseen scorers who changed matches Fipster had tried to map through different names entirely. Even when a prediction lands on the right outcome type, football has a habit of choosing its own cast list.

'There were also plenty of quieter clues worth keeping. Chancel Mbemba Mangulu, Enzo Millot and Nabil Fekir stood out without scoring in games that ended goalless or close to it, which is useful reminder that strong individual ratings do not always translate into goals for our purposes. For next week, then: keep trusting clear attacking edges when they are backed by form, but be less sentimental about familiar scorers simply because they look safe on paper. This round asked for sharper reading of who would actually finish chances rather than who merely looked entitled to them. A modest request from football, really — though it rarely stops there.'
