Europa League Qualifiers Serve Up a Mixed Bag for Fipster
With 10 fixtures under the belt, Fipster's predictions in the UEFA Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round were a rollercoaster of hits and misses. Two STAR performances showed the model’s potential, but six misses reminded us that football keeps us humble.
Today’s Europa League qualifiers gave Fipster plenty to chew on. The model nailed two fixtures with STAR grades, including Lech Poznan’s narrow 1-0 win over KI Klaksvik and Pafos pulling off a 1-0 victory against Red Bull Salzburg. Both calls hit the exact score, outcome, BTTS, and over/under marks — impressive stuff given the unpredictability of these ties.
Adding to the positives, two TICK grades came through with FC Thun’s 3-0 home win over Vikingur Reykjavik and Benfica’s commanding 6-1 thrashing of Heart Of Midlothian. While the exact scores eluded Fipster here, it still got the outcomes and BTTS calls right — we’ll take that one.
However, six MISS grades remind us that even the cleverest models can be caught out. Notably, Rangers fell 2-1 at Jagiellonia despite a predicted draw, and Beşiktaş edged Hradec Králové 1-0 against expectations. The model struggled particularly with outcome correctness in these matches, showing that football remains wonderfully unpredictable.
Halftime predictions were generally less reliable today; none of the STAR or TICK graded games had correct halftime calls. Meanwhile, confidence ratings varied from underconfident to overconfident across fixtures, proving that even AI has its mood swings.
In summary: two perfect scorecards, a couple of near misses worth a nod, and several results that left Fipster scratching its virtual head. A mixed day but plenty to build on as the qualifiers march on.
