Europa League Qualifiers Serve Up a Mixed Bag for Fipster
Five solid calls and four misses left the model with a respectable B+ day in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League. Benfica's big win and Midtjylland's away success were among the highlights, while some unexpected draws and upsets kept things interesting.
Today’s Europa League qualifiers gave our prediction model plenty to chew on, with a final tally of five ticks and four misses. Not quite a clean sweep, but enough to keep us from hiding under the desk.
Benfica’s 5-0 demolition of FC St. Gallen was a highlight, with the model correctly calling the outcome and both teams to score — though it underestimated the margin. Similarly, FC Midtjylland’s 2-0 away win at Beşiktaş saw all key predictions land, including halftime correctness and over-under calls. The model was a bit shy on confidence here, but we’ll take that one.
Hradec Králové’s 3-1 victory also earned a tick, despite missing on BTTS and halftime predictions. Meanwhile, Maccabi Tel Aviv edged Sheriff Tiraspol 1-0 with all outcome-related calls correct — a neat little package of accuracy.
PAOK’s 2-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv rounded out the day’s successful calls, nailing outcome, BTTS, over-under, and halftime predictions with appropriate confidence.
On the flip side, Anderlecht’s 3-1 win over Hammarby FF caught the model off guard — it predicted a draw and missed most accuracy marks except BTTS. CSKA Sofia’s goalless draw against Qarabag was another surprise; an overconfident call for Qarabag to win didn’t quite pan out.
Ferencvarosi TC versus Twente ended in a 2-2 stalemate that defied expectations too — an overconfident prediction for Ferencvarosi to win fell flat as both teams found the net but not in the way predicted.
Pafos’ 2-0 triumph over Hajduk Split was another miss; the model expected an away win and got none of the outcome or BTTS calls right, though it did predict over-under correctly.
All told, this batch of fixtures showed our model can hold its own but still has room for improvement — especially when it comes to exact scores and handling those cheeky upsets. Confidence ratings varied from underconfident to overconfident across matches, reminding us that even models have their off days.
