Serie A’s Fipster model keeps its chin up despite one howler

Three fixtures, two solid calls and one that went completely sideways. The model nailed the winners in Atletico-MG vs Coritiba and Botafogo vs Chapecoense-sc, but Atletico Paranaense vs Palmeiras proved a tougher nut to crack.

Today’s Serie A round served up a mixed bag for the Fipster prediction model. The standout disappointment was Atletico Paranaense versus Palmeiras, where the model confidently forecasted a 2-1 home win but instead got a 0-2 away victory. Not a single correctness flag was ticked here — outcome, exact score, BTTS, over/under, and halftime predictions all missed the mark. It’s safe to say the model was caught napping.

On the brighter side, Atletico-MG’s narrow 1-0 win over Coritiba was well predicted in terms of outcome and BTTS (both correct), even if the exact scoreline and other metrics weren’t spot on. Similarly, Botafogo’s 1-0 victory against Chapecoense-sc earned ticks for outcome correctness and halftime prediction — a neat little double whammy that shows the model can still read the room when it matters.

Overall, with zero STAR grades but two TICKs out of three fixtures, today’s performance is respectable if not spectacular. The model tends to get the winner right more often than not but struggles with exact scores and BTTS consistency when things go awry — as we saw with Atletico Paranaense’s unexpected shutout loss. Confidence ratings remained appropriate throughout, so no over-egging of predictions here.

We’ll take those two TICKs as proof that the model had its day — or at least part of it — while humbly acknowledging there’s room for improvement. After all, even the best algorithms have off days. Day grade: A-.
