Mixed fortunes as Fipster nails two but stumbles on the rest in Premiership action
Four Premiership fixtures tested the Fipster model today, which scored two TICKs and two MISSes. The model got the outcome right for Falkirk’s 3-0 win over Kilmarnock and Rangers’ 4-0 victory against St Johnstone, but missed on Dundee Utd’s narrow 3-2 triumph over Aberdeen and St Mirren’s 2-1 win against Dundee. BTTS and over-under calls were mostly solid, though halftime predictions proved tricky.
Today’s Premiership results served up a proper mixed bag for the Fipster model. The standout moment? Rangers’ comfortable 4-0 win over St Johnstone, where the model confidently backed the home side to prevail and got the outcome spot on, plus nailed the halftime call — not bad at all.
Falkirk also earned a nod from Fipster with their 3-0 shutout of Kilmarnock. The model correctly predicted Falkirk would take all three points and called the match as under the goal line, even if it didn’t quite guess the exact score or BTTS scenario.
On the flip side, Dundee Utd’s 3-2 win over Aberdeen caught Fipster off guard. The model had tipped an Aberdeen victory by two goals, so this one was a miss across outcome and exact score — though it did get both teams scoring and total goals right. Similarly, St Mirren’s narrow 2-1 success against Dundee was another miss; despite being confident in their prediction, Fipster got the result wrong but again correctly anticipated both teams would find the net.
Overall, Fipster showed strength in spotting when both teams would score and whether matches would be high or low scoring. Halftime predictions were less reliable today, with only Rangers’ fixture seeing that call come through. Confidence ratings varied too — sometimes underconfident when right (hello Falkirk), other times a bit too sure of itself (looking at you, St Mirren). All part of the learning curve.
So while we didn’t get any STAR performances today, two TICKs show there’s plenty to build on. Two misses keep us humble — after all, nobody likes a know-it-all who gets it wrong half the time. We’ll take this rollercoaster day as proof that even models need their coffee breaks.
