A Mixed Bag in the Premier League: Model Scores Some, Stumbles Some
Six fixtures, six stories — the Fipster model chalked up three TICKs and three MISSes today. From Arsenal's narrow win to Chelsea's goal fest, the model had its moments but also a few head-scratchers. Let's unpack where it nailed it and where it fluffed the lines.
Today’s Premier League action served up a proper mixed bag for our trusty Fipster model. Out of six fixtures, it landed three TICKs — not quite star quality, but respectable enough to keep the lights on.
Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Leeds was a solid call on outcome, though the exact score and other finer details slipped through the cracks. The model was underconfident here, which perhaps explains why it didn’t quite hit all marks.
Chelsea’s 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth was another TICK. The model got the outcome right and even correctly predicted both teams would score and that the total goals would be over a certain threshold. Halftime prediction? Not so much.
Sunderland’s 0-2 loss to Brighton also earned a TICK for outcome accuracy, though again exact scores and other metrics proved elusive. Confidence was underwhelming here too — modesty suits the model well.
On the flip side, Aston Villa versus Brentford ended in a 2-2 draw that our model completely missed on outcome despite getting BTTS and over-under right. Overconfidence might have played a part there.
Ipswich’s narrow win against Fulham was another miss across all prediction dimensions, with an overconfident rating adding insult to injury.
And then there was Manchester United drawing 1-1 with Tottenham — a fixture where the model expected a home win by some margin but came away empty-handed on outcome and exact score, though BTTS was spot on.
Overall, three TICKs out of six isn’t shabby but leaves plenty of room for improvement. The model tends to nail outcomes more than exact scores or halftime calls today, with confidence ratings sometimes mismatched to results — underconfident when it should be bold, overconfident when caution might have been wiser.
