A Day of Near Misses and One Solid Call in the Premier League
Seven fixtures, one TICK, and six MISSes — the Fipster model had a tough day predicting Premier League outcomes on September 5th. While it nailed Manchester City's narrow win and halftime call, other matches proved trickier, with no exact scorelines or outcomes correctly forecast beyond that.
The Premier League served up seven fixtures today, and our trusty Fipster model managed to secure just one TICK among a sea of MISSes. It’s not the kind of record to brag about, but hey, even a broken clock is right twice a day – though today it was more like once.
The standout success came with Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Coventry. The model got the outcome right, plus the halftime prediction was spot on – a neat double whammy. Exact score? Not quite. BTTS and over/under? No joy there either. But we’ll take that one as a small win.
Elsewhere, the model struggled to call outcomes correctly. Brentford-Sunderland and Brighton-Leeds both ended 1-1 draws despite predictions favouring home wins without goals for the visitors. The model did at least get the over/under right in these two games – silver linings are important.
Fulham versus Crystal Palace was another tricky fixture: predicted as a home win but finished 2-3 to the visitors. Hull City and Nottingham Forest both held Tottenham and Aston Villa to goalless draws against expectations of home victories, with halftime calls only correct in Nottingham Forest’s case.
Newcastle-Bournemouth ended 2-2 despite Newcastle being tipped for a win; at least the model nailed both BTTS and over/under here. But overall, it was a day where exact scores and outcomes mostly slipped through our predictive fingers.
So what’s the verdict? One TICK out of seven fixtures isn’t headline material for Fipster, but that lone correct outcome plus halftime call for Manchester City is worth a nod. The rest were misses across most dimensions except occasional over/under or BTTS calls.
