A Mixed Bag on Matchday: Model Nails Three but Stumbles on Two
Five Premier League fixtures delivered a rollercoaster for the Fipster model, which scored three TICKs and two MISSes. The model showed some humility with underconfident calls that paid off and a couple of overconfident blunders to keep us grounded.
Hull City’s 2-0 win over Manchester United was the day’s biggest surprise, and the model missed this one completely. It confidently predicted a United victory, getting every accuracy dimension wrong — outcome, exact score, BTTS, over/under, and halftime. Overconfidence doesn’t always pay off.
Everton’s 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace was a safer bet for the model. While it didn’t nail the exact score or halftime prediction, it correctly called the outcome, BTTS (no goals for Palace), and over/under. Not bad from an underconfident forecast.
Ipswich edged Sunderland 2-1 in another TICK for the model. It got the outcome right but missed on exact score, BTTS, over/under, and halftime predictions. The model was again underconfident here but still managed to pick the winner.
Nottingham Forest’s 0-1 loss to Leeds was another miss. The model had them winning 2-1 and failed across all accuracy dimensions once more. Another case of overconfidence that didn’t quite pay off.
Brentford’s convincing 3-0 win over Tottenham earned a TICK as well. The model correctly predicted the outcome and over/under but missed exact score, BTTS, and halftime calls. Confidence was underwhelming but effective.
Overall, three TICKs out of five isn’t too shabby — especially with some humble underconfident calls proving more reliable than those bold overconfident ones. The model showed it can pick winners even if it struggles with finer details like exact scores or halftime outcomes.
