Model’s confidence didn’t quite match the New York derby outcome
The Fipster prediction model fancied New York City FC to edge the Red Bulls, but it was the visitors who snatched a 1-0 win. While some calls landed, others missed the mark, leaving us with a day to learn from.
Today’s solitary Major League Soccer fixture saw New York City FC hosting their cross-town rivals, New York Red Bulls. The model was confident in a home win, predicting a 1-0 scoreline in favour of NYCFC. Alas, the actual result flipped that script with the Red Bulls clinching a 1-0 victory.
Breaking down the prediction accuracy: the model missed on the overall outcome and exact score — so no points for guessing who took the spoils or by what margin. However, it did get two things right: both teams scoring was off (correctly predicted no goals for NYCFC), and the over/under goal tally call was spot on. The halftime prediction? Also a miss, so no luck there either.
Interestingly, the model was ’overconfident’ in its forecast — which is just a polite way of saying it got a bit ahead of itself. Still, we’ll take those partial hits where we can get them and chalk this one up as a learning day for our trusty algorithm.
So there you have it: one game, one miss on outcome and halftime calls, but some silver linings in BTTS and over/under predictions. We’ll be back at it tomorrow with hopes of better luck (and maybe fewer overconfident moments). Cheers to keeping things interesting!
