MLS thrills and spills: Fipster nails one exact score, stumbles on a few
Five MLS matches gave the Fipster model a mixed bag to chew on today. It scored a perfect STAR with FC Cincinnati's 4-3 win over Vancouver Whitecaps, but missed the mark on three others, including Inter Miami's narrow 3-2 victory. Philadelphia Union's solid 3-1 win earned a respectable TICK. Confidence levels varied wildly, from underconfident to overconfident calls, making for an entertaining day of predictions.
Today's MLS action served up five fixtures that kept the Fipster model on its toes. The highlight? FC Cincinnati's thrilling 4-3 win against Vancouver Whitecaps, where the model hit every mark except halftime correctness — exact score, outcome, BTTS, and over/under all spot-on. Not bad for a prediction that was actually underconfident.
Philadelphia Union also earned a nod with a TICK grade after their 3-1 win over New York Red Bulls. The model got the outcome right and correctly predicted both teams would score, plus it nailed the over/under call — just missed out on the exact scoreline and halftime.
On the flip side, Inter Miami’s 3-2 victory over Chicago Fire proved tricky. The model confidently predicted a 3-3 draw — correct on both BTTS and over/under but wrong on outcome and exact score. A classic case of being "overconfident" in its call.
Columbus Crew’s narrow 1-2 loss to New York City FC also caught the model off guard; it expected a 1-1 draw and missed both outcome and exact score but did predict both teams would find the net.
Meanwhile, New England Revolution’s goalless draw with Toronto FC was another miss — the model went for a confident 3-0 home win but only got BTTS right (no goals for either side). Clearly some matches just refuse to play ball with predictions.
Overall, it was a day of highs and lows: one STAR, one TICK, and three MISS grades out of five fixtures. The model showed strength in predicting whether both teams would score and total goals going over or under but struggled more with exact outcomes and halftime calls. We'll take that one as part of the learning curve.
