Ligue 1’s Fipster model has an off day with all three predictions missing the mark
Despite some correct calls on both teams scoring and over-under outcomes, the Fipster model failed to predict any match outcomes correctly in Ligue 1's fifth round, ending the day with a clean sweep of misses and an overall grade of D-.
Today’s Ligue 1 fixtures served up a bit of a reality check for the Fipster prediction model. None of the three matches ended with the predicted outcome, leaving the model with a perfect record of misses — not quite what you want when you’re trying to impress.
Starting with Auxerre versus Stade Brestois 29, the model confidently tipped a 1-3 away win but instead got a 2-1 home victory. While it did nail both teams scoring and the over-under call, it missed out on predicting who would take the points and even got the halftime call wrong. Overconfident? Possibly.
Next up was Nice against Lille, where the model’s forecast of a 0-1 away win was about as far off as you can get from the actual 2-1 home triumph. This time, none of the accuracy dimensions landed — no outcome, no exact score, no BTTS, no over-under, and no halftime correctness. Another overconfident prediction that didn’t pay off.
Finally, Marseille hosting Paris Saint Germain saw another miss. The model fancied Marseille to win 3-2 but PSG edged it 2-1 instead. At least this time it got both teams scoring right along with the over-under and halftime calls. The confidence rating was appropriate here — just unfortunate that outcome prediction didn’t follow suit.
So, across all three fixtures we have zero STARs or TICKs — just three MISSes. The model showed some knack for spotting goals and game flow but struggled mightily on who would actually lift their arms in celebration at full time. It’s one of those days where hindsight is 20/20 and predictions are not.
We’ll take this one on the chin and hope for better luck next round. After all, even models need an off day now and then.
