A Day of Near Misses and a Couple of Solid Calls in the Championship
The Fipster model had a mixed bag on August 22nd, nailing two fixtures with decent accuracy but stumbling on nine others. While it got the outcome right for Lincoln vs Portsmouth and Millwall vs Norwich, exact scores and BTTS predictions proved trickier across the board.
August 22nd in the Championship saw the Fipster model struggle to find its rhythm, managing just two TICK grades out of eleven fixtures. The day’s highlight was the model correctly calling the outcome for Lincoln’s 1-3 loss to Portsmouth, getting both BTTS and over/under right, though it missed the exact score and halftime call.
Similarly, Millwall’s 3-0 victory over Norwich earned a TICK thanks to an accurate outcome prediction and over/under call, despite missing BTTS and halftime accuracy. The model was underconfident here, which might explain why it didn’t quite nail everything.
On the flip side, nine fixtures ended up as MISS grades. Notably, Birmingham vs Bristol City finished 2-2 against a predicted 1-2; Blackburn edged Middlesbrough 2-1 contrary to predictions; and Derby drew 2-2 with Cardiff despite forecasts favouring Derby. Across these misses, BTTS and over/under calls were often correct but outcome and exact score predictions fell short.
Halftime predictions were a weak spot overall — only three matches had correct halftime calls, none of which aligned with a full match success. Confidence ratings mostly stayed appropriate except for Millwall vs Norwich where it was underconfident.
In summary, while the model showed flashes of promise with two solid TICK results focusing on outcomes and goal totals, it struggled to consistently predict exact scores or halftime leads. A tough day at the office but hey, we’ll take those two wins where we can get them.
