Bolton, Charlton and Middlesbrough deliver the goods as Fipster hits three stars
A day of mixed fortunes for the Fipster model in the Championship, with three fixtures nailed to perfection and five where it missed the mark. The model showed a knack for exact scorelines but struggled to predict outcomes in some surprise results.
Today’s highlight reel features Bolton, Charlton, and Middlesbrough all scoring "STAR" grades by getting every prediction detail spot on except halftime calls. Each nailed the outcome, exact score, BTTS, and over/under predictions — impressive stuff from our usually modest model. Interestingly, Bolton and Middlesbrough were underconfident in their predictions yet still got it right; sometimes humility pays off.
On the flip side, Bristol City’s home defeat to Millwall was a shocker for the model, which had confidently tipped a Bristol win. Norwich versus West Brom also flummoxed the model despite correctly predicting both teams to score and an over-under outcome. Portsmouth, Stoke City, and Sheffield United matches rounded out the misses, showing that while BTTS and over-under calls often landed, outcome predictions were less reliable today.
Halftime predictions were a weak spot overall — only two fixtures saw those calls come through correctly. Confidence ratings mostly aligned with results; appropriate confidence didn’t guarantee accuracy today. The model’s record stands at 3 STARs and 5 MISSes across eight fixtures — not quite a clean sweep but enough to keep us cheekily optimistic.
So while we can’t claim flawless foresight just yet, there’s plenty to celebrate in those perfect scorelines. We’ll take that one with a wink and look forward to sharpening our halftime senses next time around.
