Opening day was rude to the model, but not entirely unkind

Fipster came out of Czech Liga’s first round with three correct calls and five misses, which is not the sort of opening flourish anyone orders. The wins were real enough, though, and the mistakes had a pattern: too many draws turned into away wins or home blowouts, while the player calls mostly arrived from elsewhere. A few names did exactly what the model liked; several others turned up and changed the script without asking permission.

The round went against the grain early, then kept going

This was a round that asked awkward questions of Fipster’s baseline. The model leaned on draws in several places and kept seeing tight games where the actual margins were wider, or simply pointed the other way. That left three tidy hits and five misses, which is a polite way of saying the opening weekend did not sit still long enough for the numbers to settle. The broad lesson was simple: when this round broke open, it really broke open. When it stayed close, it often still refused to follow the script.

One call that landed cleanly

Slavia Praha against Slovácko was one of the better reads. Fipster had Slavia down for a home win, and while the scoreline ran away from the model’s exact number, the core idea held: Slavia had enough to turn the match into a comfortable afternoon once they got moving. The post-match data backs that up neatly. Wiktor Nowak scored twice and Mojmír Chytil added two of his own, so the game was decided by the sort of repeated pressure that makes a narrow forecast look sensible even when the final margin gets a bit theatrical. Not every correct call needs to be subtle; sometimes it just needs to be on the right side of reality.

Where we overthought it

The miss that stung most was Plzen against Slovan Liberec. Fipster saw a home win; Liberec left with all three points. The model clearly gave too much weight to Plzen’s ability to control proceedings at home and not enough to how quickly that game could tilt once it stopped behaving like a routine favourite’s job. Florian Wiegele’s 9.3 rating tells you Plzen were not short of resistance in goal, but resistance is not victory. Liberec still found their way through with goals from Soliu Afolabi and Patrik Dulay after an own goal had already made things messy. That is football’s little joke: you can be busy being right in one area and still be wrong where it counts.

The players who actually owned the weekend

The standout names were mostly ones Fipster had not flagged before kick-off, which is where this round got expensive. Matěj Pulkrab scored twice for Teplice, Mojmír Chytil matched him for Slavia Praha, and Wiktor Nowak also doubled up in that same game. Quadri Adebayo Adediran did likewise for Artis, while Jiří Klíma answered with two for Mlada Boleslav in one of the more decisive reversals of expectation. Mick van Buren gave Hradec Králové an edge with his goal, Václav Jurečka settled Baník Ostrava’s win at Zlín, and Jan Suchan helped Jablonec finish their job. None of those scorers were pre-match calls here, which is rather inconvenient if you are trying to look clairvoyant.

'The useful part is that these weren’t random goals in random matches; they were decisive contributions from players who changed results rather than merely decorating them. That matters for what comes next. If opening rounds teach anything useful at all — beyond humility and a mild distrust of tidy scorelines — it is that models need time to separate stable patterns from early noise. Fipster got enough right to avoid panic, but not enough to pretend everything was calibrated perfectly. Next round should tell us whether this was just an untidy start or a proper warning shot.
