Wales shines bright while the model fumbles through a tough Nations League day
Eight fixtures, one star performance, and a handful of misses made for a rollercoaster day in the UEFA Nations League. The Fipster model nailed the exact score for Wales vs Norway but struggled to predict outcomes elsewhere, ending with a modest 1 STAR, 1 TICK, and 6 MISS record.
The highlight of the day was definitely Wales' 2-1 victory over Norway, where the model not only got the outcome right but also nailed the exact score and correctly predicted both teams to score and the over-under. A rare moment of precision in an otherwise challenging round.
Germany's 2-0 win against Serbia earned a solid tick from the model for correctly predicting the outcome, though it missed on exact score and other finer details. Not bad, but there was room for improvement.
On the flip side, several fixtures proved tricky. Azerbaijan vs Liechtenstein ended goalless despite predictions favouring a home win with goals. Similarly, Greece-Netherlands and Denmark-Portugal both saw more goals than expected, leaving the model's outcome calls off target even when it got BTTS and over-under right.
The Republic of Ireland vs Austria clash also slipped through the cracks with a 2-2 draw instead of the predicted home win. Israel-Kosovo and Malta-Gibraltar matches wrapped up as goalless or draws contrary to optimistic home-win forecasts.
Halftime predictions were mostly off except in Israel-Kosovo and Malta-Gibraltar where they hit their mark despite overall misses on outcomes. Confidence ratings hovered appropriately or underconfidently but didn’t always translate into success.
All told, this was a day where the model had its moments but mostly left us wanting more accuracy across outcomes and scores. Still, one star call is better than none — we'll take that one with a wink.
