Mixed fortunes in Champions League play-offs as Fipster nails one and fluffs two

The Champions League play-offs brought a mixed bag for our trusty Fipster model today. It got one right, missed two, and left us with plenty to chuckle about.

First up, Hapoel Beer Sheva’s 2-1 victory over Sabah FA was predicted spot-on in terms of outcome — a solid tick in the box. However, the exact scoreline proved elusive, as did calls on both teams scoring, total goals over/under, and halftime correctness. Still, an "appropriate" confidence rating means the model knew it was playing it safe here.

Then came NEC Nijmegen’s 1-3 defeat by Bodo/Glimt. Here the model was wide off the mark on outcome and exact score but did get both teams scoring and over/under right — so not all doom and gloom. Confidence remained appropriately measured, which is more than we can say for some pundits.

Finally, Slovan Bratislava’s 1-1 draw with Celje was a tough nut to crack. The model confidently predicted a home win with three goals to nil — quite the swing and miss. None of the accuracy flags lit up here, and that overconfidence rating suggests Fipster might have been watching too many highlight reels.

Overall, with zero STARs but one TICK out of three fixtures, today’s performance was a reminder that even clever algorithms can have an off day. Outcome predictions were hit or miss; exact scores remain elusive as ever; BTTS and over/under calls showed some promise but didn’t consistently pay off; halftime guesses were universally off target.

We’ll take that one with a wink and look forward to better days ahead. After all, predicting football is like trying to herd cats — entertaining when it works, baffling when it doesn’t.
