Charlotte shines as Fipster nets a perfect score in MLS action
A mixed bag for the Fipster model on August 15, with a standout STAR performance from Charlotte's exact scoreline prediction and a couple of solid TICKs, but also a couple of misses to keep things interesting.
Charlotte’s 3-1 victory over Columbus Crew was the star turn of the day for our trusty Fipster model. Not only did it nail the outcome, but it also got the exact score spot on — a rare feat that deserves a tip of the hat. The model also correctly called both teams to score and the over-under line, proving it can be quite the oracle when it wants to be.
Atlanta United FC and Toronto FC each earned TICKs with their wins over New York Red Bulls and New England Revolution respectively. The model got the outcomes right and predicted goals from both sides, plus it was spot on with over-under calls. Halftime predictions, however, remained elusive for these fixtures — looks like halftime is still Fipster’s blind spot.
On the flip side, Orlando City SC versus FC Cincinnati and CF Montreal against DC United were less kind to our algorithmic friend. Both matches ended in draws that defied the predicted outcomes. Despite missing on results and exact scores, at least Fipster correctly anticipated both teams would find the net in these encounters — silver linings are important.
Overall, five fixtures gave us one STAR, two TICKs, and two MISS grades. The model showed confidence where appropriate but occasionally overstepped or underestimated its powers — particularly with halftime calls and some outcome predictions. Still, a respectable showing that keeps us coming back for more.
